Pierre, thank you so much for having solved the WP-PostRatings problems.
I think it’s not a special PostRatings, but still a shoutbox problems, because the SQL Sytax warning with the utf8 now comes when acitvating ANY Plugin after having activatet shoutbox (where it didn’t appear).

But obviosly this seems to doesn’t matter anyhow, because if one ignores the warning and just goes to the blog and then back to the pluginpage, the warning is gone and everything is fine.

So: Thank you very much for this great plugin.

I am gladly awaiting the 3.5 version with the spam capture.

Pierre, thank you for you message. I’m sorry but I had to deactivate your plugin and take the one of azizperdana, because that one works together with star rating and we need a rating system.

I rather would like to use your plugin because it and has more and better options and looks the same in Firefox and IE (exept that in IE the smileys are schon underneath each other instead of besides each other).

So if you are able to solve the problem with star rating I would be very glad.

Azizperdanas plugin is also based on Jalenecks wordspew, but there is no utf8 there in the code. Maybe this will help you to find the solution.

Pierre, I’m very sorry if I get on your nerves, but I would be very happy if there is any chance to have your shoutbox AND a post rating system. I tried post start rating 0.3.2 now by O Doutor but ist doesn’t work because of an inconbatibility with shoutbox. Is there any chance to get both plubins compatible?

Wordspew is great – unfortunately there´s a big problem when using together with the popular plugin wp-cache. When you enter a new message and the cache is built, no new messages are shown till the timeout of the cached page has been reached. In wp-cache options you could define rejected URIs which are not cached – unfortunately, this is not possible for wordspew, as it is called in sidebar.php and therefore generates no URI.

Does anyone know how to make these two plugins compatible?

Pierre, Your current Wordspew version 3.2 has one small compatablity issue with the new release of WP 2.3. It is a simple fix, that deals with its reference to "wp-admin/upgrade-functions.php". WordPress has moved and renamed that to "wp-admin/include/upgrade.php" in WordPress 2.3. Open up wordspew.php in the plugin folder, and search for : wp-admin/upgrade-functions.php and replace it with: wp-admin/includes/upgrade.php Save and close. Now it is WP 2.3 compatable.

And the shouts aren’t showing up in a neat vertical list, but they’re just listed horizontally like words in a sentence. what could be causing that?

The different we in the live version its a upgrade. We try it again upgrade to the last WP version. And try to restart apache? I have install the last version of shoutbox 3.31 and it works great. I update the wordpress version to last version 2.2.2 and shoutbox do not update new chat messages in his box. I test it on IE7 and Firefox 2 and other people test it on OSX. Same problem. I do a restore of WP 2.1.2 and the shoutbox is working again.

Also have we problems on double sentences it a long time… also on older version i report this bug. I think this a problem on IE7. Firefox has nog problems..

But we like your shoutbox!! It’s great to use it! No spam! Great!

1. on wordspew.php there is an extra carier return, which break the javascript line, not a big deal ;o)
2. when I ask wordspew to keep more than 100 message (200 for example) the ajax doesn’t work.

Hi Pierre, I’m still not sure how to use the Custom Smilies plugin with the shoutbox. the smilies are in the wp-includes/images/smilies folder, which I think is the default wordpress folder. They aren’t named the same as default though.

Il y a un truc qui cloche avec le shoutbox.

Un guest peut entrer le nom d’un membre existant et se faire passer pour lui.

Tu devras possiblement ajouter une condition pour t’assurer qu’un guest ne puisse se faire passer pour un membre au même titre que tu vérifies pour les spams word et ip du poster.

Thanks for the new release! But there is still one issue left. On my blog I use the encoding windows-1250. Now when I write a message with some slovak characters (like ľ š č ť ž) they show up fine at first. But when I reload the page, they turn to gibberish (ščťžý). Any way to fix that?

I had the same problem that you have. Finally I found out that the problem was not due to Pierre’s wordspew but to another plugin I had, more-smilies, who is interfering with ajax.
I uninstalled the plugin and put Custom Smileys instead and now everything is fine again.

Thanks for a great plugin! I have two questions for you:
1. We’re using redoable 1.2, and the plug seems to be ignoring the color settings from the shoutbox option when a user is coming from FF. Works fine with IE 6 & 7.
2. As you can see from my link, we’re using it as a full page. Is there anyway to have the chat shut down when no administrators are logged in? We’re using the shoutbox to chat about a webcast, but I don’t want to have it running full time. I know I can disable the plugin manually, but wondered if there was another way since we’re pulling user names.

@Kai: I have similar problems using chinese unicode characters in the shoutbox. It would not allow me to key in more than 4 chinese characters. In chinese, it is common to have sentences made up of many chinese characters. Hence the post will be not displayed in the shoutbox.

Pierre suggested a fix somewhere up there in the comments here. This temporary fix still work except now comment out line 510 in wordspew.php.

I opened the FeedWordpress php and it hasn’t any session_start(). It only has a header(). I commented everything sensible in FeedWordpress but it still throws this warning.

I have another FeedWordpress on other site without Shoutbox and everything works fine.

My question is: why is shoutbox called if the cron points to a single file (update-feeds.php, see http://projects.radgeek.com/feedwordpress/install/) ? Is the library of shoutbox introduced to the allways-include list?

Talksina, My mom had Rubella while she was pregnant with me. I was born completely blind with Congenital Cataracts, but then they restored my sight to 20/200 in right, 20/300 in left, until they tried lazer treatments on me. The lazers gave me Glaucoma, which is deteriorating my Optic Nerve. It took my left eye down to 20/400 (two fingers in front of face thats it) overnight, the right eye is still around 20/300 or so, but slowly getting worse, and I don’t know a thing about making sites more accessible for blind or visually impaired people like us. I know XHTML fairly well, but I am finding out Zoomtext and Jaws don’t work quite well on websites, so I was wondering what you do? maybe I just have to learn the software better I dunno yet, but their training me on it. thanks

I just love your ajax shout box, but I found a bug, in the message beep function. As I am totally blind, I find it very very useful (even if the beep is too low in my opinion, a better sound effect should be chosen)
and the smilies should be labeled, I could try to do it

On the shoutbox window, instead of the switch to turn the sound on/off, there was written onclick= »JAlSound() » title= »…or something similar
and the other was an accessibility issue. I repeat, I am blind, and could not verify in this way, if the sound is on or off, until I press Enter key on the message send button…

it must be a mysql injection volnerability of some kind, is all I can come up with. maybe I can try going into phpmyadmin, and decreasing the size of the ‘text’ field under the wp_liveshoutbox field, maybe that’ll work? cuz it appears in phpmyadmin, that there is no length value set. There should be a limit on that, so it seems like a simple mysql injection volnerability 2 me.

But the shoutbox eats and publishes also words in spamlist.

Pierre, your AJAX Shoutbox is terrific, but some of my blog’s Mac user visitors complain that the feature crashes Safari. Works fine in Firefox and IE. Not sure if anyone else has this problem…

there is a BUG in your version of the plugin.
You start a session -> session_start();
But WordPress uses sessions too, so you cause warning-messages which may couse errors (like in my case).

Solution:
replace the session_start(); call with
if (session_id() === false) session_start();

Pierre, I keep getting a nasty troll on my shoutbox that knows how to change his IP address. I want my blog to remain open for anyone to register and have the shoutbox set for registered users only. I keep banning his IP addresse, but after a while he comes back on with a new IP address. I have not removed this troll’s username, because when he comes back with a new IP address, I want to know it is the same person. I have used an interesting plugin for blog comments called Disemvoweler (http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/Disemvoweler). Do you think it might be possible to make that Disemvoweler plugin somehow work with your shoutbox plugin? It would be hysterical to see this troll post something without the vowels in his comments! LOL!

It also says « no one online » which is clearly wrong. I’m assuming there’s a problem with the MySQL table that records who’s online at what time, but I don’t know how to go about fixing it. Hope you have some idea, Pierre!

1. the smiley list fails to appear on the site (I’ve even tried to manually modify the wordspew.php, but with no succes);
2. the shoutbox doesn’t refresh itself (so, the new messages appear only the page is refreshed).

I figured out the problem with the Shotbox.

The error was caused by a conflict between this AJAX Shoutbox, and the

more smilies plugin

The shoutbox worked when you posted there, because I had disabled more-smiles plugin at that time.

For now, I am using WP-Grins instead, which is ok it does the same thing, except I prefer more-smilies, just because of the fact that more-smilies has the same smilies for the admin write page too.

but anyway if u see on that site, alot of people are getting that error. The author fixed it for WP 2.1, but he doesn’t know it doesn’t work in your AJAX shoutbox, so I guess I’ll just have to settle for WP-Grins isntead until more-smilies plugin gets fixed

Pierre, the error in 2.1 is caused by the preg_replace function in formatting.php

specifically, the line that reads

$content = preg_replace($wp_smiliessearch, $wp_smiliesreplace, $content);
}

according to the WP forums, that line isn’t using delimiters correctly. so whem smilies are being converted to actual smile images in wordspew, preg_replace now requires the use of delimiters before and after

for example

/:lol:/ or #:lol:#

so that is the problem with your wordspew plugin, its not putting delimiters before and after the smilies.

Hi Pierre! Thank you for pushing the shoutbox project forward and forward. We at DelayOmma use the AJAX shoutbox since it’s initial release and love it so far. But there’s one problem. Our site is German and when people post messages including « ä » or « ö » or « ü » which is often used in German there is a blank space before this letter.
Example: « Das würde ich auch tun. » = « Das w ürde ich auch tun. »
Why is that and how can I change that? The original version by Jalenack didn’t do this to our posts. No offence! Just asking for help…

However with Rudd-o’s version I get an alert saying « An error took place while posting your comment. Please try again later. ». Perhaps it may be a clue? The function that exists in his fatAjax.php file is:

Hi, I didn’t really get what you mean. Did you mean removing all other folders from the plugins directory? I deleted archived folders for ruddo’s wordspew, and still it doesn’t work. I have also deactivated all other plugins, but it still hasn’t worked, so it doesn’t appear to be a conflict with another plugin. I’m not sure where the problem is. The clue for me perhaps would be that without javascript it works. But I don’t know how to analyse from there.

Hi I have a problem which I have no idea how to solve. When I am logged into wordpress, I can send a message on the shoutbox. However, when I am logged out, or basically everyone else including my site visitors are unable to send a message. The only difference in the HTML code would be <input type="hidden" value="" id="shoutboxU" name="shoutboxU"/> in the form field. This allows logged-in users to message. However since I’ve not made any changes to the code I think the real problem lies somewhere else. I have only edited wordspew.php to remove the css.php reference as well as removing <div id="chatinput"> The same problem occurs even if I use your original file. It would be best if you could email me with specific information that you need. Thanks!

Thanks so much for doing this! I’d been looking at commercial shoutbox services and finding none that had good internationalization support. I’m working on a project for a tribal site in Central America so localization is very important — in fact by the time I’m done I may be able to add a Native American language to your list. (I’m not naming it because I don’t want it Googleable until I’m ready to make an announcement.)

Meanwhile, though, I have a problem: after installing the Spanish localization files I still see only English. I’ve downloaded http://www.monblogamoua.fr/upload/File/PO/es_ES.zip and unzipped the wordspew-es_ES.mo and wordspew-es_ES.po files into my plugins/wordspew directory, then deactivated and reactivated the plugin, but no Spanish. I must be missing something obvious.

i used to install ajax live shoutbox but couldn’t stand the spam attack, so i uninstalled it…

First let me Thanks for the hard work, you have done i.e. you have alomost changed the plugin to its entirity. I have implemented your version. I have some query’s, please reply me, as I have been victimized by some remote scripts, in the original wordspew and whosoever was behind had posted 20,000 messages with just name and links, till I disabled the plugin.

I wanted your expert advice on the following issues:

1. As mentioned above about spaming of Shoutbox -what will be the best way to stop remote script posting messages with just Name and Links.
2. Is it possible to itegrate Authentication image code before accepting the comment. If yes, can you guide me « how to integrate Image Authentication code? ».

Please advice.

i hope you can help me. I installed your Shoutbox. It works but if you post a comment you must refresh the page to see your comment. It didn’t akutalise self. Sorry my english is bad, hope you can understand. If i take the box from jack it works fine, but there is a lot of spam and i dont’t like this. Hope you can help me.

Hello Pierre, can you help me with your newest version of wordspew.
When I have it installed I cant validate at the w3.org validator.
I get 13 errors having to do with ‘ phpsessionid ‘
So I got fed up and put in the previous version.
Then I get spam that I have to go in and remove.
Do you know of anyone else experiencing this prob?

I have the same problem as Ahmaz. And its weird because after seeing you last comment I checked on another computer.  The error seems to only show up for the admin.

Is it my imagination, or are your extra steps likely to slow the page-loads by any perceivable amount?
Also, I can’t seem to get rid of the horizontal scrollbar – even though I’ve tried to change the ‘Horizontal Scrollbar Killer’ in the CSS file. Any suggestions?

Hi Pierre, I appreciate seeing your modifications here.
The shoutbox is a great addition to our blog site, but spam has been an increasing problem. I have also made some modifications and have a couple of other ones in mind. I’ll mention them here, in case they are of use to you or others:
1) Limit the number of links per message
At the start of the jal_addData function, add the following three lines:
$max_links = 3; $pattern = "`(http|ftp)+(s)?:(//)((\w|\.|\-|_)+)(/)?(\S+)?`i";
preg_match_all($pattern, $jal_user_text, $html_matches);
if (count($html_matches[0]) > $max_links) { return; }

2) Block messages with the URL field in the $_POST array
Uncheck the "use URL field" in the shoutbox settings and then block all spam POSTs that include the URL field:
Also in the jal_addData function:
if ($jal_user_url != "http://&quot { if ($jal_user_url != "") { return; }}

3) MD5 Hash field
Something I have thought about but not yet implemented is to include a hidden field in the shoutbox, the value of which is a MD5 hash key of something definable, which changes every day. The id of the field could also change if desired.
For example:
$hidden_field_id = md5(date("dmy")."randomstring");
$hidden_field_value = md5(date("dmy")."randomstring2");

This way, the key would change every day and its presence in the $_POST array could be checked before allowing each message through. A potential issue would be where a user opened the web page with the shoutbox before midnight and then submitted a post after midnight, as the dates will then be different. To prevent this problem, the script should also check for the md5 key for yesterday’s date.

This approach would prevent mass-spam being sent out to all sites with shoutboxes. The spammer would need to know the md5 key for that day, or write code that would automatically read it. Different methods could be used to make the latter more difficult.

Any thoughts?

it mentioned about the sql injection problem which sounds pretty dangerous (?).
Also, I like the feature where it tells you who is online at the board at the moment which is quite cool..
Is it possible for you to implement this?

I was trying to but I realised my knowledge in PHP is too weak…
